NYC approves apartment building with separate entrance for the poor
July 23, 2014
It would be difficult to come with a more on-the-nose metaphor for New York City’s income inequality problem than the new high-rise apartment building coming to 40 Riverside Boulevard, which will feature separate doors for regular, wealthy humans and whatever you call the scum that rents affordable housing.
Extell Development Company, the firm behind the new building, announced its intentions to segregate the rich and poor to much outrage last year. Fifty-five of the luxury complex’s 219 units would be marked for low-income renters—netting some valuable tax breaks for Extell—with the caveat that the less fortunate tenants would stick to their own entrance.
The city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development approved Extell’s Inclusionary Housing Program application for the 33-story tower this week, the New York Post reports. The status grants Extell the aforementioned tax breaks and the right to construct a larger building than would ordinarily be allowed. According to the Daily Mail, affordable housing tenants will enter through a door situated on a “back alley.”
Any of the unwashed folk who complain about such a convenient arrangement, of course, are just being ungrateful. As the Mail points out, fellow poor-door developer David Von Spreckelsen explained as much last year:
"No one ever said that the goal was full integration of these populations," said David Von Spreckelsen, senior vice president at Toll Brothers. "So now you have politicians talking about that, saying how horrible those back doors are. I think it’s unfair to expect very high-income homeowners who paid a fortune to live in their building to have to be in the same boat as low-income renters, who are very fortunate to live in a new building in a great neighborhood."
In these economically fraught times, it’s easy to forget that the super rich earned their right to never see you, hear you, smell you, or consider your pitiful existence. Expecting them to share an entrance would be unfair.
According to the NY Post our ‘progressive’ Mayor, Bill de Blasio, voted in favor of the resolution that create the segregated entrances.

The Koch Brothers and the Puppets They Control:
The Koch brothers for decades operated in the shadows of American public life while pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into front groups promoting what Sen. Bernie Sanders has called the “billionaire agenda.” Now Republicans are trying to silence Koch brother critics like Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. So what are the Republicans trying to hide? It’s not well known, but David Koch was the 1980 Libertarian Party candidate for vice president. He campaigned on a platform that called for abolishing taxes on the wealthy and profitable corporations, shutting down Medicare and Medicaid, repealing Social Security, putting the Postal Service out of business and doing away with the minimum wage. “They want to repeal every major piece of legislation over the past 80 years that protects the middle class, the elderly, the children, the sick and the most vulnerable in our country,” Bernie said. Once Americans know what the Koch brothers stand for, Sanders told Ed Schultz on Wednesday, they will stand up to them and to “the puppets that they control.”
Sordid Tale of Bob McDonnell Totally Explains Income Inequality
Bill Moyers speaks to Jacob Kornbluth, director of Inequality for All, a new documentary film about how America’s widening income gap is a threat — not only to the viability of our workforce, but also to the foundations of our democracy. The film features economic analyst and former Clinton cabinet member Robert Reich, who uses humor and facts to explain why the consolidation of wealth into the hands of few affects all Americans today.
Kornbluth tells Moyers that his working class roots shaped his decision to make the film: “My friends knew [I was poor] because I got those free lunches in the classroom,” he says. His mother raised a family of four on a teaching salary that, at times, was as low as $9,000 a year. Kornbluth says with Inequality for All he wanted to gain a deeper understanding of the issues from his childhood while elevating the conversation beyond party lines and partisan bickering. “Although [inequality] is a deeply moral question, the argument in the film is that it’s an economic one as well,” he says.
Bernie: Never Say Die.
“Goldman Sachs shouldn’t have been eligible for any Fed giveaways because it wasn’t a commercial bank. But a special “waiver” allowed Goldman to become commercial bank so it could be rescued from actions it took before it was a commercial bank. Before that it was an investment bank. Yet, strangely, it seems to have kept operating as an investment bank even after the transition, too, even though commercial banks aren’t allowed to do that.”
…a special waiver…..these arrogant bastards and their living dead legislatwhores make the laws as they go and the mind numbingly tranced out US citizens merely stare apathetically at another, “are you as smart as a fifth grader” idiot fest as the good ship lollipop of state slides inevitably down, down, down 20,000 leagues beneath the sea.
America has evaporated, like the ether used to purify a senator’s cocaine. America no longer exists. All that is left of America is the stench of a 101% yellow greed and the BO of the TV brained American sucker that made all that wealth transfer happen. The American sucker: a new species of man whose DNA no self respecting scopes monkey from another mother would bother to to clown clone.
The American people are such misdirected Veg Box lobotomized dip shits that the average American’s idiocy could only be measured in megatonnage. No culture of learning here! Not in our united states of confusion.
Back beyond the mists of time, in a galaxy far, far away from the 7-Eleven a man, an editor big on free speech was asked, “do we have a constitution”? Benjamin Franklin responded, simply, “If you can keep it”. I would add, that I fantasize, likely Ben said it in a mocking manner, sort of like, “Of course not, you dumb fuck, ‘cause you can’t keep it, you are an American; you’re too damn stupid, you will drop the ball.
I wish one person would forget what fucking country they live in, stop waving a flag and just participate in their Democracy. I don’t give a fuck which Democracy, any democracy. Question: who are your government representatives? Do you know? You should know. The problem isn’t that people claim to love their country, the problem is that those who could participate in their Democracy are very handy at finding excuses not to….for years and years.
That has changed. I’m talking about myself. I feel like I have waited my whole life to get involved. I am the 99%.
Jennifer Fox, 19 claimed that police hit her in the stomach twice before pepper spraying her. One officer struck her with his foot and another pushed his bicycle into her. It wasn’t clear if either of those incidents were intentional.
Seattle fire department spokesman Kyle Moore told The Washington Post that a 19-year-old pregnant woman was among those that were examined by paramedics.
Doctors at Harborview Medical Center diagnosed that I was having a miscarriage. They said the damage was from the kick and that the pepper spray got to it [the fetus], too,” she said.
The Scoville heat chart indicates that U.S. grade pepper spray is ten times more painful than the blistering hot habanero pepper, according to Scientific American. While law enforcement officials regulary claim that the spray is safe, researchers at the University of North Carolina and Duke University found that it could “produce adverse cardiac, respiratory, and neurologic effects, including arrhythmias and sudden death.”
The Move Your Money project is a nonprofit campaign that encourages individuals and institutions to divest from the nation’s largest Wall Street banks and move to local financial institutions. Little has changed to prevent another financial crisis or to end ‘Too Big To Fail,’ and with Congress unwilling to act, we are encouraging individuals to take power into their own hands by voting with their dollars and no longer contributing to a financial system that has led our country astray. We are a campaign that gives people real, concrete actions they can take to create a more sane, stable and localized banking system.
If you leave your money with big banks, they will use it to pay lobbyists to keep Congress from fixing the system.
It is depraved to cut social insurance and health care programs for people who are old and sick and cannot work. The idea that those people should be asked to “share” in the alleged sacrifice of millionaires who leave more money in the seats of their corporate jets than these people have left over at the end of the month is outrageous. When that level of wealth inequality exists but the government insists that little old ladies be forced to “pay more” so they’ll be ” more responsible” (and call it shared sacrifice!) something has gone fundamentally wrong. Fix that, we fix the country.
GOP is SHIT.
Pat Condell, shares his insights on Islam and the Rape of Women.
Islamic law, a criminal law supports the rape, degradation and debasement of women in UAR, Egypt and many other countries. Under Islamic law, rape can only be proven if the rapist confesses or if there are four male witnesses. Women who allege they were raped, without the benefit of the act having been witnessed by four men who subsequently develop a conscience, are actually confessing to having sex. If they or the accused happens to be married, then it is considered to be adultery, an Islamic criminal offense.
Qur’an (2:282) - Establishes that a woman’s testimony is worth only half that of a man’s in court (there is no “he said/she said” gridlock in Islam).
Women are demeaned EVERYWHERE on planet Earth. It is something people do, and some make it a part of their religion. There are also passages in the bible, aspects of christianity that condemn women to death for sex.
Is it the context of UAR society and other cultural traditions that makes it so much worse for women in the UAR than in the US and other western countries? Is religion a catalyst to degradation of the human race. Religion usually doesn’t seem to be about people; religion is not about worshiping people.
Strange, in England and some other countries if both perp and victim agree they can be tried under Jewish or Inuit or Muslim/Sharia law. In France the influx of Muslim immigrants ended up in a ghetto, where legally, French law enforcement is prohibited. France has created a Muslim state within its borders - a profoundly bad way to handle immigrants. Maybe one thing we in the USA do better than most is the “Melting Pot” thing. FBI says most domestic terrorism is carried out by Caucasian, adult males, fundamentalist christian/right wing persuasion.
It is also strange that in the US most of the bible thumping misogynists are the core of the Republican Party - they want to punish women with medieval reproductive laws. It seems that those who would defer to religious manuscript as a basis for criminal law are the sick freaks that need to be kept out of our legislatures, regardless of the damn flavor of religious insanity.
James Richard Verone of North Carolina spent his whole life playing by the rules and staying out of trouble. Having worked as a delivery man for Coca Cola for 17 years, Verone was known as a hard worker and honest man.
Yet when he was laid off from Coca Cola three years ago, Verone was desperate to find work. He eventually found employment as a convenience clerk, yet he began to notice a protrusion in his chest. He developed arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome, and soon the pain became too much for him to bear. He filed for disability, but he was denied any sort of coverage by the federal government.
So earlier this month, Verone drove to a local RBC Bank and told the teller he was robbing them for a dollar. He said he wanted to rob the bank in order to go to jail and get medical coverage:
Verone didn’t want to scare anyone. He executed the robbery the most passive way he knew how. He handed the teller a note demanding one dollar, and medical attention. “I didn’t have any fears,” said Verone. “I told the teller that I would sit over here and wait for police.”
Determination, Perseverance, Ingenuity, Hard Work: I love this guy. He is my hero. If, if, if I had the money I’d get him the dream team and go after this crummy Government we have. It makes a point, whether he meant to or not, it makes a point - which is cheaper, Medical or Medical PLUS housing, food, electric etc.? Which is cheaper GOP, say GOP?
GOP is S H I T.
