Walmart workers march in LA, saying ‘no thanks’ to new stores
July 5, 2012
More than 4,000 union members and community supporters, including many Walmart workers, marched in Los Angeles Saturday June 30. They opposed the chain’s bid to bring its tornado of destruction into urban centers.
The march was led by 100 current and former Walmart workers, members of Organized United for Respect at Walmart (OUR Walmart), who carried the lead banner: “Walmart = Poverty.”
Amanda Greiner, a Walmart worker for seven years in northern California and now a full-time organizer for OUR Walmart, told Labor Notes that Walmart workers are fed up with poverty wages, lack of benefits, part-time hours, and disrespect from management.
Most of Walmart’s workers “are on welfare,” she said, and work “such low part-time hours that we can’t qualify for health insurance.”
Walmart’s pitch to the public is that it has the lowest prices anywhere, offers “competitive” pay, and aids local communities.
Greiner disagrees, pointing to an independent study saying the average wage is $8.81 an hour—not the $12.66 the company claims.
Girshriela Green, who works at the Baldwin Hills Grenshaw Plaza Walmart in L.A.’s Black community, told the LA Wave, “I’m a manager in one of their biggest consumable departments. I make $9.80 and have to depend on county health care and food stamps to make ends meet.
“I’m neglected on a daily basis, but that’s not just my story, that’s the story of Walmart workers nationwide,” Green said. “When I complain to managers they just say there’s a hundred people waiting in line for my job.”
The difference between the Constitutional Lawyer Obama and George Zimmerman?
No difference and neither are role models.
Evil: the depth, degree and certain perpetuation of the profound level of shit eating stupidity in the USA. ACTA can only make it worse.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Friday that although Poland signed the international copyright treaty ACTA last month it will not move to ratify it, and admitted he was earlier wrong to support the controversial agreement.
Tusk also said on Friday he appealed to the members of the European Parliament’s European People’s Party (EPP) fraction, to which his party Civic Platform (PO) belongs, to drop their support for ACTA in its present form in favor of a fresh approach to intellectual property rights.Apart from Poland, three other EU countries so far have backed away from ACTA ratification - Slovenia, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic.
And marijuana, the terrorist drug. Doesn’t kill like alcohol or tobacco but it causes terrorism.
Revolving Door: One who has worked and will work in the future for a conglomerate for consolidation but who is blatantly working now as a corporate whore while in the employment of the government in a position of trust. Money talks and the US people can drop dead.
Entitled: Michael Powell, former chairman of the FCC who, like most FCC chairman and Republican FCC commissioners walk through the revolving door between government employment and lobbyist for a corporation pushing media consolidation. Michael Powell is the essence of an arrogant entitled puss who has no ability whatsoever to do any good for the people of America. Michael Powell’s dad, general Colin Powell, a Bush lame fuck, provided the scummy wake that Michael rode in to a traditionally lame fuck job of sucking off corporations at the FCC. We should just be so grateful to bask in the entitled presence of his stinking useless ass because his stench is better than democracy? These bastards on the FCC, like Michael Powell, Kevin Martin and currently Julius Genachowski have been or are now strongly opposed in their efforts to consolidate media by:
1) The People
2) The US Legislature
3) The US Courts
Useless bastards, like Michael Powell and Julius Genachowski who end up with positions working for the giant corporations they are SUPPOSED TO REGULATE continue to attempt to turn all local media into abysmal garbage like FOX TV and other mainstream crap. It is not in anyone’s best interest to have only “one” voice in their community: Newspapers, TV and Radio all owned by Rupert Fuckoff. The FCC is charged in their mandate to prevent exactly what trash like Michael Powell, Kevin Martin and presently Julius Genachowski are doing in attempting to further consolidate media.
Call your legislators and tell them you stand with Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) who has introduced legislation to implement new ethics rules for members of the FCC, including preventing commissioners from accepting a job at a company within one year of an FCC proceeding involving the company.
the FCC. You do have the right to weigh in. Let the FCC know how you feel about their attempts to consolidate media further.
Democratic FCC Commissioner Michael J. Copps:
"With the perils of consolidation on clear display in market after market, it would seem to me that we should be closing loopholes, instead of providing them."
Revolving Door Corporate Owned Whores: Powell, Martin and Genachowski if shot in the head would be the waste of a good bullet.
Egyptian-American journalist, Mona Eltahawy, was detained for 12 hours by Homeland Security forces last Wednesday, during which time she was brutally beaten and sexually assaulted.
Whoops, sorry! Apologies: Mona Eltahawy was assaulted by Egyptian security forces which do basically the same thing to their people as US Homeland security and US Police do to American Citizens. But, Obama at least scolds the Egyptian Security when they threaten their people.
Use it or lose it.
GOP says f—k you The People.
"Trickle Down Economics": works in Somalia, where pirates ransom the rich and give to the poor. In Somalia those pirates have created a small economy. In the USA the Pirate GOP rob from the poor, take a cut and give to the rich.
"Global Warming": according to the GOP Global Warming does not exist, even though NASA and the US Navy have programs to deal with the effects of Global Warming. Even though every independent scientific study indicates it is happening and will get worse. The GOP again do what is best and expedient for the greedy: themselves and the rich.
"War": The American people wish to end war. The GOP says that We the People don’t understand what is best; We the People are to dim to make such a decision. War is profitable for some folks but not for the poor who pay for it with their quality of life and lives of their children.
"Abortion": The GOP says abortion is bad, that poor women should be brood mares for the state and supply the GOP war effort with little soldiers. The Catholic church says abortion is wrong and the poor should supply their priests with fresh meat before it is slaughtered in some war.
